Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology

Mission: The Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology from Federal University from Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) has a strategic role as a center of research and training of human resources capable of contributing significantly to the construction of knowledge in the field of Cardiovascular Physiology and Oxidative Stress, to elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms of clinical relevance, and therefore to promote social benefit.

Objective: To promote science communication related to oxidative stress and its relation to cardiovascular disease. Stimulate scientific interest and promote integration between different study groups related to the subject, both nationally and internationally. Encouraging possible collaboration between the research groups participating in the event. Encouraging scientific and professional interest, allowing the recruitment of students and professionals interested in continuing the scientific research.

Background:  Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology from Federal University from Rio Grande do Sul was created in 1974 and is a pioneer in research in the field of Cardiovascular Physiology and Oxidative Stress in the state. It became a center for dissemination of these methodologies to other researchers from different institutions, demonstrating interest in a democratic science, committed to universal knowledge and concerned about regional development. The group has published in journals such as Hypertension, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, Life Sciences, among others. Production indicators are also extremely favorable. The group has trained 30 PhD students and 51 Master's students and participated in final course assigments of 30 Graduate students. Currently there are 03 post-doc students, 04 doctoral students, 05 master's students and 04 scientific iniciation students. The group has scientific association with several national and international researchers. It also has two scientific agreements with Capes (Higher Education Personnel Improvement Coordination, Brazil) in progress.

Structure and Operation: Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology at UFRGS has several equipment acquired through various edicts of research, such as CNPq Universal Edict in 2008, 2011 and 2014, FAPERGS Researcher in 2012 and the Department of Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul in 2009. Currently, we have three teachers in the area (Prof. Adriane Belló-Klein, Prof. Alex Sander da Rosa Araujo, Prof. Paulo Cavalheiro Schenkel) one collaborative teacher at UFRGS/Nutrition (Prof. Martine Hagen) one laboratory technical assistant (Tânia Gattelli Fernandes). We also have scientific association with Prof. Susana Llesuy (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Prof. Neelam Khaper (Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Lakehead University, Canada), Prof. Pawan Singal (St. Boniface General Hospital and University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada), Prof. Daniele Mancardi (University of Turin, Italy), Prof. Maria Claudia Irigoyen (Hearth Institute, São Paulo, Brazil).
